Creamy, sweet, spicy and everything a good dressing should be- you’ll want this spicy honey mustard dressing on sandwiches, wraps, salads and more.
I’m back ‘atcha with another amazing dressing recipe! Creating your own dressings from scratch is, in my opinion, one of the pillars of healthy, flavorful eating. Storebought dressing has its time and place, but most of the time, a homemade dressing is where it’s at.
Making your own dressing at home means:
- You have control over the ingredients! You choose what and how much of each ingredient goes into your homemade honey mustard.
- You can customize the dressing however you like it.
- The flavor of small-batch homemade sauces is going to outshine mass-produced, shelf-stable varieties by far.
- You’ll save money! Keeping a handful of simple ingredients stocked in your pantry means you can make a quality dressing for a fraction of the cost.
- Reduced waste. How many times have you bought a dressing, used it once or twice and then it died a slow, sweet death in your refrigerator door? Just me? Mmkay. Well, I know for me a homemade dressing is far more appealing and more likely to get used up than storebought.
Honey mustard dressing is a well-loved and versatile sauce. I love this hot honey mustard sauce for wraps (like this one with crispy chicken tenders!), sandwiches, French fries, salads and as a marinade for grilled or roasted proteins. Let’s talk about how to make my slight twist on a classic honey mustard dressing!
What you’ll need to make spicy honey mustard dressing:
Plain Greek yogurt: plain yogurt provides creaminess and tang as well as a boost of protein, score!
Mayo: mayo makes this a gloriously creamy sauce and provides an ideal mouthfeel. I like to get olive oil mayo or avocado oil mayo.
Dijon mustard: Dijon mustard is a smooth condiment made from ground mustard seed, white wine, vinegar and seasonings. You could also use yellow mustard, spicy mustard or whole-grain mustard.
Honey: honey provides the irresistible sweetness and balance that we know and love in a honey mustard salad dressing. If you don’t have honey, you could sub maple syrup, agave nectar, pure cane sugar or brown sugar (but of course then it wouldn’t really be ‘honey’ mustard).
Apple cider vinegar: ACV provides tangy flavor to balance the sweet and creamy. You can find apple cider vinegar in the baking aisle of any regular grocery store. You could also use an equal amount of lemon juice.
Salt and pepper: salt lifts the overall flavor of this delicious sauce.
Sriracha or hot sauce: technically, the hot sauce element is optional. But, the addition of a spicy element makes this dressing cover all of the flavor elements: creamy, sweet, tangy, spicy and savory! And a sweet spicy vibe is just so, so good. I like sriracha here but you can use your favorite hot sauce.
How to make:
Add all ingredients to a medium bowl or salad shaker and whisk until smooth and combined. You can adjust the consistency with a little water if desired. If you’re serving this as a spread or dip you’ll likely want a thicker consistency (recipe as written) but you may need to thin with water to get the perfect consistency for a salad dressing.
Taste and season per your taste. An extra pinch of salt will lift the overall flavor, more hot sauce to make it spicier, more honey if you want it a little sweeter, a splash more ACV for tang and acidity. (I like it just as written but everyone has different taste buds!)
Ways to serve this homemade spicy honey mustard:
- As a spread for crispy honey mustard chicken wraps
- As the perfect dipping sauce for raw vegetables
- Lathered onto sandwiches or wraps
- As a perfect companion for French fries, sweet potato fries, soft pretzels, chicken fingers, chicken strips, chicken wings or onion rings
- As a marinade for grilled chicken, grilled salmon or pork tenderloin
- As a salad dressing of course! Use on fresh greens, pasta salads, chicken salad, potato salad or grain bowls
FAQs:
There are lots of ways to add a spicy kick to this dressing. Use your favorite hot sauce, a pinch of red pepper flakes or cayenne pepper or a spoonful of adobo sauce from a can of chipotle peppers in adobo.
Store leftovers in an airtight container in the fridge for up to two weeks.
Double the mayo and omit the Greek yogurt.
