Ericaโ€™s Thoughts

If you know me, then you know I LOVE musicals. I saw Wicked on Broadway when I was on my 8th grade DC trip and it is what I consider the birth of my love for theater. So of course, when I heard they were making a Wicked movie I was beside myself with excitement. I took my four-year-old, Lia, to see Wicked in theaters in November and we have been playing the soundtrack and movie nonstop ever since. So when I asked her what she wanted for a birthday party theme, I was not surprised at all when she said, โ€œWICKED!โ€

So here we go, Iโ€™m sharing all the details for a wicked good time and how to bring this broadway musical to life in your own home. This was a birthday party for my five-year-old, but this theme is incredible for older kids, a girlsโ€™ night, themed event, game nights and beyond. It is fun for guests of all ages.

Invitations

I used this template from Etsy and customized it in Canva. I had them printed at my local Staples. They turned out so cute!

Decorate for a Wicked Themed Party:

I kept the decor pretty simple but the color palette was pink and green of course!

Party Supplies:

Drink carafes, cups, plates and such that I used to create a touch of magic.

Party favors:

I love party favors that arenโ€™t junk! These sweet little gifts are fun for kids and also somewhat practical which as a mom, I am all about.

Activities for a Wicked Party:

โ€‹Iโ€™ll share the activities and games I did with five-year-olds, plus a few other thoughts on activities for slightly older kids or adults.

  • Jewel wands: this one was such a hit! I bought this set of plain wooden wands and extra jewel and gem stickers so the kids could decorate their own glinda wand.
  • Decorate your own witch hat: a set of witch hats, glitter glue pens and foam glittery star stickers makes for a simple make your own hat station.
  • Coloring pages: I printed a bunch of fun Wicked coloring pages and bought a few new sets of these clickable markers (these are SO awesome for less mess and no lost caps!)
  • Yellow brick road cake walk: write the numbers of however many guests are in attendance on pieces of yellow card stock and arrange them to be the โ€˜yellow brick roadโ€™. Write the same numbers on small pieces of paper and place them in a cup. Play songs like Dancing Through Life or Popular while kids dance around and follow the road. When the music stops everyone finds a โ€˜brickโ€™. Draw a number from the cup and whoever is standing on that number wins a prize! I used pink lollipops and bath bombs for prizes.
  • Face painting: I hired a face painter and it was such a hit. 10/10 recommend. It gave the kids something to do and to look forward to and everyone loved their face paint! If you are local, I used Micaelaโ€™s fancy faces.
  • Dress up as your favorite character! Lia dressed up in her favorite witch costume and had her face painted green while Penelope wore her prettiest pink dress and had her face painted pink. My lil mysterious Elphaba and bubbly Glinda! Boys could dress up as the Wizard of Oz, cowardly lion or Fiyero.

Other party ideas:

  • Scavenger hunt: have kids or adults participate in small teams to either 1) find different objects or clues or 2) complete various tasks.
  • Wicked memory: arrange a variety of pink and green objects on a large tray. Let everyone look at it for 60 seconds, then cover it with a towel and give everyone another 60 seconds to write down as many objects as they can remember.
  • Witch hat toss: decorate traffic cones to look like witch hats and use them as a ring toss.
  • Other party classics like Simon says, duck duck goose, musical chairs and freeze dance but with a Wicked twist like โ€˜Elphaba saysโ€™ and musical chairs with the Wicked soundtrack.

Food for a Wicked Themed Party:

The goal of my party spread was to cover one half of the table with green foods and the other half of the table with pink/red foods! I thought this spread was the perfect spread of kid-friendly options and food adults love to eat as well.

I think this food spread can be applicable to soooo many other party themes as well! Use the red/pink ideas for a Valentineโ€™s Day party, Barbie party, Princess party, or Red Carpet party, and the green food spread for a St. Patrickโ€™s Day party, Grinch-themed or Monster bash, or a superhero/Hulk-inspired soiree.

And donโ€™t forget drinks! I made two fun punch flavors and the kids got to fill up their new tumbler with their favorite!

I hope this guide on how to throw a wicked-themed party is helpful and takes your event to the next level! As always, Iโ€™d LOVE to see your spellbinding soiree so if you make your way to the Emerald City please please snap a photo or video and tag me on Instagram!

Instructions

Turkey Pesto Pinwheels

Stir together the cream cheese and pesto until combined. Add a large dollop to each tortilla, spreading it all the way to the edges. Add a sprinkle of cheese and place 3-4 slices turkey on one side of the tortilla. Add microgreens, pickled onions and season with all-purpose seasoning. Roll up the wrap and slice into 5 pinwheels, slicing off the very tips of the tortillas at the end. You may have to re-roll the end pieces as theyโ€™ll be a little looser with less filling.

Ham and Cheese Pinwheels

Whisk together mayo, dijon mustard, honey, grated garlic clove and seasoning. Spread a dollop on each tortilla. Add a sprinkle of cheese, 3-4 slices ham on one side followed by several pieces of butter lettuce. Season everything with all-purpose seasoning and roll the wrap tightly. Slice into 5 pinwheels.

Punch

Combine punch ingredients in two different serving vessels and serve cold.
